2010

Commerce City Community Enterprise held its twelfth annual Derby Winter Festival on Friday, December 10 with over 1200 people celebrating the holidays in the newly refurbished Derby Square.  Families enjoyed horse-drawn carriage rides, art projects for children featuring traditions from around the world, hot cocoa, cookies and festive music.
Santa heard the wishes of over 500 children from his seat at Ace Jewelry as he handed them a special holiday gift bag.

Featured, were forty trees sponsored and individually decorated by local businesses.  A burst of wind during set-up in the afternoon left organizers abuzz with fixing and moving fallen trees. South Adams County Water & Sanitation District even bought ornaments to replace broken ones saying, “We want the family to receive a beautiful tree.”

La Casa Del Rey won the business category of the tree decorating contest with Disney-themed ornaments and toys.  Kearney Middle School won the school category with their Japanese-inspired ornaments.

Overall, the event was a great success. The Denver Foundation and One Community sponsored the annual festival.  In all, Community Enterprise helped 135 families receive trees and food baskets. Community Enterprise wishes to thank everyone who participated.

2008

This year was a milestone for the Derby Winter Festival as Community Enterprise and the citizens of Commerce City celebrated its 10th anniversary!  Community Enterprise would like to especially thank Commerce City One Community who was a new and major partner of the event this year.  Together, the organizations helped to create a more international theme for the festival.  Different stations were set up for children to stop by and make paper lanterns, gingerbread cookies, and even learn some origami paper folding techniques.  Commerce City One Community decorated different trees highlighting seven different cultures and countries’ traditions (Spain, Mexico, Japan, Germany, Israel, Native American cultures, and the Dominican Republic).  The annual art contest took on a multi-cultural flare as well as it too was focused on these seven different countries and cultures.  Another new addition, and an obvious favorite amongst all the children, was the introduction of piñatas to the festival.

2008 Art Contest Winners: First Place: Rosehill Elementary- Japan; Second Place:         Alsup Elementary- Mexico;  Third Place: Dupont Elementary- Israel.

And, Congratulations to the Adams County Sheriff's Department who won the tree decorating contest for the second year in a row!
